With backlapping paste (lapping paste), you can sharpen the cylinder and bedknife of your cylinder mower again without dismantling them. Apply the paste to the cylinder and let it rotate backwards. This article explains which paste to choose and what you need.

How to find the right item
- Search by the original part number. Enter the original part number in the search bar at the top of the webshop, or scan the barcode using the barcode icon. You will then see all compatible items.
- No number? Choose the category Backlapping paste and filter by Suitable for brand, followed by Grit number and Contents.
- Compare the dimensions with your old part. The product page lists all dimensions and the machines the item fits.
Backlapping paste fits almost all cylinder mowers, including those from Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Ransomes, Baroness and Hayter.
What information do you need?
| Grit (particle size) | The lower the number, the coarser the paste. We have grit 50, 80, 100, 120, 180 and 220. |
|---|---|
| Quantity | Aerosol can for occasional use, or a bucket of approx. 4.5 kg or approx. 11.3 kg for regular use or multiple mowers. |
| Application | Which mower and mowing height will you use the paste for? |
What should you consider when ordering?
| Coarse: grit 50 and 80 | For blunt or slightly damaged blades: removes material quickly. |
|---|---|
| Medium: grit 100 and 120 | For regular maintenance. |
| Fine: grit 180 and 220 | For finishing and for mowers with a very low mowing height, such as greens mowers. |
Tip: work from coarse to fine if your blades are very blunt. Rinse off all the paste thoroughly after backlapping and readjust the bedknife. If the blades are damaged or badly worn, sharpening or replacing them is better than backlapping.
Replacing the bedknife? Backlapping only helps if the bedknife still has enough material. If the bedknife has become thin, is damaged or is worn down to the wear limit, a new bedknife is often the better choice: you will be mowing neatly again more quickly and prevent additional wear to the cylinder. Search for a new bedknife using the original part number or the mower type.
